Why not unlimited hosting?

Web hosting is an extremely competitive business with a very large number of competitors. Because of this, you might find offers out there for unlimited bandwidth, or unlimited disk space. Don't believe it.

Bandwidth and disk space aren't free for anyone. If a provider were to actually allow you to use an unlimited amount of space or bandwidth, it would end up costing them a fortune! (Afterall, every provider pays for the space and bandwidth that they in turn sell to you.) What all of these providers will do is suspend your account for "excessive usage" at some point, when you stop being profitable for them. Their advertisement of "unlimited" is at best just means they don't give you a pre-set number. But it does NOT mean you can use as much as you want. (Which translates into deceptive advertising in our opinion.)

Read the fine print. If the hosting company you're looking at isn't outright fibbing to you, then their fine print (terms or conditions) will include statements like "...our service is a shared hosting service, which means that multiple websites are hosted from the same server and share server resources. Our service is designed to meet the typical needs of small business and home business website subscribers in the United States. It is NOT intended to support the sustained demand of large enterprises, internationally based businesses, or non-typical applications better suited to a dedicated server..." and "...our offering of 'unlimited' services is not intended to allow the actions of a single or few subscribers to unfairly or adversely impact the experience of other subscribers..."

Notice that they don't describe what "fair" means, and in the legal text they use quotes on the word unlimited. They know they don't mean it.
