How do I set up SpamAssassin on my email account?

Enabling SpamAssassin On Your Hosting Account

  1. Login to your cPanel and scroll down to the Mail section of icons.
  2. Click on SpamAssassin.
  3. Check the current status at the top, if it says SpamAssassin is currently: disabled then click Enable SpamAssassin.

Configuring SpamAssassin To Use Blacklists

  1. You may configure SpamAssassin to use one or more blacklists. To do so, click on Configure SpamAssassin at the bottom of the page.
  2. Enter up to 10 blacklists in the fields of the resulting page. A few examples of blacklists are:
    • sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
    • dsn.rfc-ignorant.org
    • dul.dnsbl.sorbs.net
    • list.dsbl.org
    • bl.spamcop.net
  3. Start with the "required_score" field set to 5. The smaller the number, the more agressive the filters are and the higher the chance of non-spam email being labeled incorrectly.
  4. Click on save at the bottom of the page to save these settings.

To Download Caught Spam Or Not...

SpamAssassin will label all mail it thinks is spam, which lets you filter it with your email program. However, you may also choose to not bother downloading the messages, and have SpamAssassin delete them immediately. To do this, click on Auto-Delete. The score above this button tells SpamAssassin what score to use as the cutoff point for whether to delete or not, and can be different than the "required score" set on the configuration page.
