Is there a way to have a counter on my site?
Yes, but you may not really want one. They often involve advertising for someone else, or giving your email address out—which they can then sell to advertisers and spammers. If you are sure you still want to go this route, there are many places you can use to do this. Here are a few:
- StatCounter - www.statcounter.com/free_hit_counter.html
- Free Hit Counter - www.freehitcounters.net
- Free Counter Plus - www.free-counter-plus.com
A quick google search will reveal more sites that offer variations of this than you can shake a browser at. However, there is a better way.
Site Statistics... The Real Way To Go
If your site is hosted with us, then you have built-in statistics already waiting for you. The three are Webalizer, AWStats and Analog. We recommend AWStats as the most accurate.
To access any of these, log in to your cPanel and look for the Stats section. Just click on the name of the stats software you'd like to use. They each work a little differently, and you may need to spend a few minutes the first time before you know for sure how to interpret the results, but they are all much more informative than a counter sitting on your page.
The easiest advantage to point out is that with a typical site counter you don't get an accurate count. Someone can keep clicking on the refresh or reload button and artificially inflate your number. It also doesn't tell you much about who or when people are accessing the page or site. With site stats you can get more details than you'll ever need.
